Context
This Shiny App is being developed as part of the CarboGrass project
(https://carbograss.cipav.org.co/)
, where the team conducted a systematic map of how grassland management practices affect soil carbon stocks in livestock systems.
It provides an interactive way to explore the large dataset generated from published scientific articles, allowing users to filter and create targeted subsets (e.g., by country, altitude, MAP, MAT, management practice etc.).
Please note that this App is a work in progress. The complete dataset will be released in early 2026 — stay tuned.
Instructions for using the Subset Creation Panel
The Subset Creation Panel allows you to filter the database of grassland studies according to your research needs.
To select studies by country, click directly on the desired country on the interactive map. Selected countries will be highlighted in blue.
Clicking on the same country again will unselect it.
By default (if no countries are selected at the beginning), the system includes all countries in the dataset.
However, once you have started selecting and unselecting countries, the default “all countries” option is no longer active.
To return to the initial state (all countries and default filter values), you must use the Reset Filters button. This ensures that the full dataset is displayed again before applying new filters.
Continent filter: Select one or several continents from the dropdown.
Publication date and environmental filters: Adjust the sliders for publication year, altitude, mean annual precipitation (MAP), and mean annual temperature (MAT).
Multi-site values (e.g., 684/802/1500 m) are handled automatically: a study is included if any of its sites fall within the selected range.
The checkboxes allow you to exclude studies lacking reported values for specific environmental variables (i.e. MAT, MAP, or altitude)
IPCC sampling threshold: Choose one or several thresholds (or “Missing” if you want to see the article where it is not reported).
General population type: Select among pasture, meadow, mixed system, or silvopasture. If you select one type, all combinations containing it (i.e. “pasture; meadow”) are also included. You can select more than one.
Intervention type: Choose among Type I, II, or III. If you select Type II, an additional dropdown appears to further filter by specific intervention sub-levels (multi-entry values are also handled).
Results: The main panel shows the filtered subset (Title, ID, and key study variables). The total number of articles matching your criteria is displayed above the table. Use the Download full subset button to export the filtered dataset as an Excel file.
